In 1890 the now world famous Mozartkugel was invented by the Salzburg
confectioner Paul Fürst

In 1884 my great-grandfather Paul Fürst opened a confectioners here in Salzburg, in Brodgasse 13, which soon became extremely popular with the Salzburg public. He took to heart the phrase in his opening advertisement "...based on his many years of practical experience in the most renowned confectioners from Vienna, Budapest, Nice etc., he will strive to constantly offer the best and the newest....", and after long experiments in 1890 he created a sweet called Mozartkugel - or Mozartsweet, as it was called in the beginning. He chose the name Mozartkugel because of (the then not so popular) Mozart, son of Salzburg. It was, however, the quality and the fine taste of this new speciality, which brought the Mozartkugel such great success.

The composition and the production of the "Original Salzburger Mozartkugel"
At least they are wrapped in silver paper with a blue imprint.

By using this expensive production process, and with the same recipe, the same Original Mozartkugel are still produced by hand in the same house and sold exclusively in our three Salzburg confectioners. To take the story further: In 1905 Paul Fürst introduced the Mozartkugel at an international conference in Paris and received a gold medal for it. At this time other Salzburg confectioners copied the Mozartkugel and the sweet industry also began to produce this popular speciality. Especially after the Second World War it was produced in millions, which contributed a great deal towards its world wide fame. It remains a fact that only those Mozartkugels produced by the Fürst confectioners can really call themselves the "Original Salzburg Mozartkugel. In the case of all the other products on the market, they are mostly industrially prepared deliberate copies of Fürst originals. Unfortunately, many of the products which are called, and resemble the Mozartkugel, often have very little to do with the real thing. As producer of the "Original Salzburger Mozartkugel", I am of the basic opinion that the Mozartkugel is a sweet, and not a Mozart Souvenir to be sold at unsuitably sunlit street stands. One should also be somewhat hesitant when it comes to various Mozart attributes such as pictures, violins etc. The Mozartkugel is a famous, independent product, and it is inappropriate to constantly use the name of the great inventor. The Mozartkugel is a high quality sweet - no more and certainly no less.
